Numerical modelling and simulation can address three important issues associated with the subsurface CO2 sequestration plans for CO2SINK, which practically cannot be examined with other means. These issues are:
  • Simulation of what-if scenarios to assist planning and design of the Ketzin subsurface sequestration laboratory and accompany the injection experiments.
  • Understanding the long-term fate of CO2: plume evolution, phase changes, chemical reactions and their influence in the porespace/permeability evolutions of host and cap rocks.
  • Support risk assessment for the long term evolution of the CO2 reservoir.
The issues addressed are taylored to the specific characteristics of the Ketzin site and will follow closely the operational development of this sequestration facility. Moreover, the results from this study will be relevant to other similar geological environments in Europe and worldwide.
