Abstract:

Carbon disulfide is a chemical commonly used and transported over the world. It is an example of a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). Remediation of spills of a DNAPL poses particular challenges. This study investigates remediation techniques for carbon disulfide in both saturated and unsaturated zones.

Preventive soil conservation requires:
• Development of process understanding with respect to the fluid-fluid interaction in the subsurface.
• Development of groundwater remediation technologies in the unsaturated and saturated zone taking into account potential scenarios of contamination.
• Demonstration of efficiency of the developed remediation techniques on a technical scale.
• Demonstration and investigation of fluid migration in the unsaturated zone on a technical scale.
