Streaming potential in variably saturated porous media
descriptionStreaming potential is the electric potential generated by fluid flow in a charged porous medium. The streaming potential is related to pore water velocity, bulk electrical conductivity, pore water charge excess, and soil porosity. Although streaming potential in saturated conditions is well understood, there still is considerable debate about the adequate measurement and modelling of streaming potential signals in unsaturated soil. In this study, drainage and imbibition experiments will be made on a 1-m long soil column and this will be monitored using advanced streaming potential and tensiometer measurements. In addition, a 1D hydrological model will be coupled to an electrical forward model to analyse how streaming potential varies with water content.
