Comparison of the Reactivity of Nano-Iron Particles towards PCE in a Contaminant Plume and a Source

The use of zero-valent metal particle suspensions for subsurface remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminations is a promising method. In order to assess and compare the performance of the method under different conditions, two different variants are to be tested: The treatment of a contaminant plume is directly compared to the direct injection into the source zone of the contamination. By this the efficiency and flexibility of the technology shall be tested. The application of the technology directly in a source would be preferable, since this could affect the life time of the contamination in contrast to a plume treatment.

In an existing experimental setup for column tests the reactivity of three particles with PCE (tetrachloroethene) is to be tested: KKM48 (milled Fe test product), KKM47 (milled Fe test product containing 10 % of Al) and activated NANOFER STAR (commercially available Fe particles). The tests comprise of a set of two columns each, where in one column the particles are in direct contact to the contaminant in phase, in the second column a dissolved contaminant is pumped through the column. The columns are to be set up and a flow of (ground) water is to be established and maintained for 60 days. Samples (gas and liquid) are to be taken on a regular basis. Furthermore the master thesis shall comprise evaluation and interpretation of the measurements. Results and conclusions are to be summarized in a concisely written report also including a brief literature review and to be defended in an oral presentation (ca. 30 minutes).

Experiments will be supported by the analytical laboratory of VEGAS and the workshops of the institute.
