The objective of my talk is to give a flavor of the type of R&D work carried out in Shell, especially in the area of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). I will start my talk with some basics of oil reservoir engineering and the stages in oil recovery. The models used in reservoir engineering are very similar to those used in environmental geohydrology, since we also study multi-phase flow in porous media. I will discuss some EOR methods like polymer flooding, steam injection, surfactant flooding, and miscible gas injection. Then I will give some examples of both experimental and modeling R&D work I am involved in.
