21st IAHR YPN BW Annual Colloquium

21st IAHR YPN BW Annual Colloquium

November 4, 2022 /

The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), Young Professionals Network (YPN) of Baden-Württemberg hosted the 21st annual colloquium entitled “Sustainable Water Management: Challenges for the Next Generation” with participation of experts and students from the universities of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, as well as from the water management industry.

The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research, Young Professionals Network – Baden Württemberg (IAHR-YPN BW) successfully promoted the 21st Annual Colloquium on November 4th, 2022. The goal of the IAHR-YPN BW Annual Colloquium is to bring together experts to disseminate and discuss the most up-to-date developments in water and environmental issues. This year’s theme, entitled “Sustainable Water Management: Challenges for the Next Generation”, tackled a broad spectrum of topics, such as droughts, sediment transport, hydropower, hydraulic design with consideration to risk, and many more. Both young professionals and keynote speakers had the opportunity to exchange perspectives from different parts of the world, which is an attribute of the international nature of the IAHR-YPN BW. This year’s strong participation of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in the Young Professionals session enriched the event with cutting-edge research, such as the work presented by KIT’s postdoctoral researcher Michele Trevisson, who was awarded the Best Young Professionals Presentation Award (see below). The afternoon session featured expert keynote speakers from the industry and academia, namely: Dr.-Ing. Ulrike Scherer (Scientific Manager for Water Research, KIT), Philipp Thumser (Co-founder and Director of I Am Hydro GmbH), Prof. Dr. Mário Franca (Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management, KIT), Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Siebel (Department Head of Hydropower Planning & Geomatics, Tractebel Engineering GmbH).

The Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management strongly supported the event through the Academic Links Stefan Haun, Beatriz Negreiros, Maria Ponce, Federica Scolari, and Kilian Mouris. The abstracts of the presentations is available as PDF here.

In addition, the event raised awareness on Microplastic pollution of water bodies through the support of the Una Terra Project entitled “#lessplastic for our environment and our future”, whereby participants were encouraged to check out the project’s educative videos (Youtube Channel: The Plastic Tap).
