Ivan Yotov receives a Humbolt Research Award

June 1, 2026 /

The Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation has awarded the research award to Prof. Ivan Yotov of the University of Pittsburgh (USA). As part of this award, he will visit the SFB and the Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems from June 1 to November 30, 2026.

Ivan Yotov is Professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pittsburgh and Mercator Fellow within the Collaborative Research Center  1313. He is an outstanding applied mathematician with strong relations to the engineering sciences. Due to his remarkable achievements in research, the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation granted him the Humboldt Research Award.

Ivan Yotov has made major contributions to the theory and practice of finite element and finite volume methods, to domain decomposition algorithms for linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic PDEs, with applications to multi-physics problems in flow and transport in porous media and computational fluid dynamics and solid mechanics. His work has applications in a broad range of areas related to energy and environment, including groundwater flow and contaminant remediation, enhanced oil recovery, and hydraulic fracturing, as well as biomedical areas such as wound healing and arterial flows, where his theoretical work has opened entirely new areas of scientific inquiry. In particular, it should be noted that he has the excellent ability to further enhance the fundamental mathematical findings he has developed with engineers and thus very successfully incorporate them into models that can then be successfully used for important applications.

Ivan Yotov's research focuses complement excellently with the research focuses in the field of porous media research at the University of Stuttgart. Through his input, the increasingly important bridge between the mathematical and physical foundations and the diverse fields of application has been further developed in an excellent way in the long term.

As part of the research award, Ivan Yotov will visit the University of Stuttgart several times for extended research stays. We are very much looking forward to continuing our successful collaboration.
