Report: Fluid Mechanics 2: Excursion on 1st April 2026 – report

April 2, 2026 /

As part of the Fluid Mechanics 2 lecture series, the Department of Hydromechanics and Modeling of Hydrosystems organized a one-day field trip to study karst phenomena in the Danube-Aach system. 25 students and members of the institute's staff participated.

For the third year in a row, Holger Class organized a full-day field trip for students in his Fluid Mechanics 2 course. In 2024, the group visited the karst system Schwäbische Alb, and in 2025, they toured the facilities of the state water supply in Langenau.

This year's excursion took place on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, and took the 25 participants to explore karst phenomena in the Danube-Aach system. The tour was led by experienced karst expert Rafael Grimm from the "Freunde der Aachhöhle" association, who knows the area exceptionally well and shared his in-depth knowledge of the Aach region with the participants.

The following natural phenomena were visited:

  • A karst spring with a cave behind the spring outlet
  • Waterfall Doline: A Ponordoline with an underground connection to the Danube-Aach system
  • Aachtopf: Germany’s most abundant karst spring
  • Tiefe Grub Doline: A large doline
  • Bleiche Spring: An outlet of karst water with a spring pot in the molasse

At each station, participants were given an explanation of the characteristic karst structures in the terrain and beneath it, with constant reference to the paths taken by the water. The excursion was a valuable supplement to the theoretical training in fluid mechanics lectures.
