The theme of our BiP was "International Water Management -Sustainable (Ground) Water Management and Social Implications in an International Context". The program started with online lectures and ended with a face-to-face block in Stuttgart from 12.03. to 16.03. 2024. The general focus was on future river management (including ecohydraulics, renaturation), with the Rhone, Rhine, Danube and Po in particular being the focus of our collaboration.
In the preceding virtual part, three consecutive lecture units were held by the three participating institutions. These were:
- Human Footprint on Rivers: Understanding Anthropogenic Impacts and Innovations in Sediment Management (Stefan Haun, Stuttgart).
- 'The role of fluvial geomorphology in the major river rehabilitation project in Italy: the Po river renaturation plan' (Simone Bizzi, Padua).
- Interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality in riverine sciences, application to the Rhône River (Hervé Piegay, Lyon).
During the week of attendance from March 12-16, the students from Lyon, Padua and Stuttgart (19) were supervised and accompanied by WAREM Course Director Anne Weiß. Exciting excursions took the participants to the Danube, where Philipp Thumser and Christian Haas from the company "I am Hydro" from Sankt Georgen gave a vivid report on the revitalization of the Danube, among other things. On the Rhine, the Iffezheim barrage was visited and the participants received information on the Integrated Rhine Program as well. This includes the practical implementation of flood protection projects - the effects of the loss of retention space due to historical structures, protective measures for villages and ecological flooding.
Finally, there was a one-day workshop organized by the partner university in Lyon and conducted by Aude Montillet and the company AWAYKE https://www.awayke.org/
The aim of this workshop was firstly to gain a better understanding of themselves and their respective roles in a group in order to make teamwork more efficient in the future. The success of this workshop was evident in the final presentations, which reflected the BiP and the week in Stuttgart in an unusual way.
The adventures of the fish Snickers could be admired in a comic. The correspondent from the "World Wise Water" channel interviewed students who reviewed the topics of the BiP. In a movie, two Bachelor students sought an answer to the question: What now? They streamed films that were shot during the week and, last but not least, there was a presentation that used a hololense to make the invisible visible, for example Europe’s only cave fish in the Aachtopf. Storytelling :-)
Have fun.

*Blended Intensive Programs (BiP):
"Blended Intensive Programs (BIPs) are funded by ERASMUS and the DAAD and offer teachers and learners new and creative opportunities for international educational cooperation and participation in jointly designed courses.
BiPs consist of a virtual and a face-to-face phase that enables a short study or training period abroad. They can be part of existing university curricula, complement them in a meaningful way or establish a new teaching format (DAAD)
