EU-Project: Augmenting grid stability through Low-head Pumped Hydro Energy Utilization & Storage (ALPHEUS)

The expansion of renewable electric energy sources in Europe defines a need for new decentralized storage solutions to balance the electricity supply with the demand in the European grid.  Low head pumped hydro storage in coastal areas is a promising solution to balance peak values of the renewable energy supply by simultaneously increasing the flexibility of the energy system at the same time.  Therefore, the ALPHEUS project aims to improve the reversible pump/turbine (RPT) technology as part of a sustainable and resilient plant design. It makes pumped hydro storage economically viable in shallow seas and coastal environments and coincidentally contributes to a robust renewable energy system throughout Europe meeting future requirements.
