The objective of the Shell research and development organization is to develop technologies that enable the economic development of difficult oil and gas fields. More specifically, the wells R&D department works on well construction and completion technologies for deep and remote locations and for so-called tight reservoirs that do not flow very well.Apart from a description of how Wells R&D functions within Shell, two examples of projects will be described. The first one concerns the modeling of circulating non-newtonian, solids laden drilling fluid through a well. This is within the context of the industry-wide trend to automate drill rig operations. The second one concerns a hydraulics based reservoir stimulation technique that enables the economic creation of multi-lateral well structures for improved reservoir drainage. The challenges range from solving fluid-rock interactions for drill bit performance, to reservoir productivity simulations for defining the multilateral dimensions, to solids transport studies for determining the operational requirements, and to mechanical engineering work for developing the required hardware according to oilfield standards.
