SUMMARY:Modeling considerations for large-scale carbon sequestration
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the important physical processes of two-phase flow in porous media involves building models that can capture complex dynamics consisting of multiple spatial and temporal scales. For very large-scale problems such as geological carbon sequestration, some modeling choices must be made to obtain solutions on a reasonable timescale. One such choice is to upscale the equations and reduce the dimensionality of the problem. Recently, vertically-integrated models have been applied to CO2 injection with some success. These vertically-integrated approaches show promise for providing fast and flexible means for evaluating long-term CO2 storage security.
