SUMMARY:Compositional Space Parametrization- new approach for compositional simulation
DESCRIPTION:I describe a Compositional Space Parameterization idea and a family of methods for improvement of compositional flow simulation. The approach is based on casting the nonlinear governing equations, including those that describe the thermodynamic phase equilibrium, in terms of the tie-simplex (tie-lines for two-phase flow) space. The compositional space is then discretized using a limited number of tie-simplexes for the range of pressure and temperature. All coefficients in the governing system of equations, including the composition, density, and mobility of the phases, can be computed then using multi-linear interpolation in the discretized space. The accuracy and efficiency of the nonlinear formulation based on CSP are compared against standard and advanced EoS simulation using both the natural and molar formulations for several challenging compositional problems. The extension to multiphase systems can be achieved using tie-simplex parametrization. I describe a new multiphase bypass method based on this idea and present example.
