Noelia Margarita Loaiza Villagómez studied "Environmental Protection Engineering" from 2017 to 2023. Her outstanding Master's thesis entitled "Experimental Investigation of Bioaugmentation and Electrokinetic Transport of Aerobic TCE Degrading Bacteria in Porous Media" was supervised by Dr. Simon Kleinknecht from the Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems, Research Facility for Subsurface Remediation (VEGAS).
In her work, Ms Loaiza Villagómez investigated the microbial remediation technology "bioaugmentation", which involves the targeted introduction of specialized microorganisms to degrade pollutants underground. In an "upscale" experiment, the microorganisms introduced into the porous medium aerobically oxidised the pollutant trichloroethene "TCE". This method was combined with electrokinetic transport to promote the distribution of microorganisms and the degradation of pollutants.
