Discharge Measurements for the hydropower plant Bambuna in Sierra Leone

Abstract

For preparing a reliable discharge-water level relationship, measurements are carried out on the river Seli in Sierra Leone under low and high flow conditions. The discharges during the different conditions are determined by combined measurements of the geometry of cross sections and the flow velocities in cells along the measured cross sections. In the low water phase, an Aquaprofiler from Seba Hydrometrie GmbH & Co. KG is used, while an ADCP from Sontek is used during high flow period. Both measuring instruments determine the flow velocities by using the Doppler Effect. The frequency shift of the emitted signal due to the flow velocities of the particles in the water is recorded, where the shift in frequency of the reflected signals is proportional to the flow velocity within a cell. By taking the cross section geometry into account the discharge within the cross section can finally be obtained.
