Abstract

DFG-Project: Optimal and robust combination of energy storage systems for massive integration of renewable energy – a focus on hydropower/hydrostorage solutions

New developments in expansion planning are the basic fundament to incorporate new facilities and equipment to meet the changing demand for electricity. However, the integration of an optimal mix of energy storage solutions into the power system is a general prerequisite to allow the addition of massive renewable energy. As the optimal energy storage solution is relying on many different grid services and plant operation modes a detailed modelling is required. Pump hydro energy storages (PHES) represent a mature and well-engineered technology and can provide valuable flexibility for variable renewable energy source integration. The inclusion of PHES in expansion planning demands the site identification of viable pump hydro energy storages locations by parametric modelling also taking into account potential investments and operation costs.
