Erosion behaviour measurements of undisturbed sediment cores from the Belgian North Sea bed

Abstract

One part of Quest4D-activities (Quantification of Erosion and Sedimentation patterns to Trace the natural versus anthropogenic sediment dynamics), founded by the Belgian Government in the framework of the SSD Science for Sustainable Development research action of the Belgian Science Policy, aims at a better understanding of sediment transport processes in the Belgian part of the North Sea. In order to establish a long-term simulation of the erosion/sedimentation processes, field and laboratory data on erosion stability are needed, because this parameter are most often missing in impact and modelling studies. Therefore, the Flanders Hydraulics Research, a research centre of the Flemish Government, committed the University of Stuttgart to perform a sampling of undisturbed sediment cores from the seabed of the Belgian North Sea coast and subsequent laboratory experiments, which include the following activities: measurement of wet bulk density, determination the depth orientated erosion stability and measurement of erosion rates for selected depth.
