Thermally enhanced in situ remediation of a BTEX contamination at a former gas works site

Abstract

The unsatured zone below the tanking area of a former gas works was contaminated with BTEX. This contamination was remediated with the innovative thermally enhanced soil vapour extraction technology TUBA by injecting steam into the subsurface and vaporizing the contaminants.

The overall remediation costs amounted to 264.000 DM or 242 DM per ton of soil treated.
