Investigations on urban river regulation and ecological rehabilitation measures

Abstract

Urbanization has great impacts on geomorphic, hydrologic, habitat and aquatic biota characteristics of river systems, but very few river management methodologies have been developed specifically for urban or heavily engineered rivers. The influences of urban rivers to the integrated river system, as well as the interactions between urban river reaches and more natural river reaches have been neglected. Therefore, it is of vital importance to clarify the role of urban rivers, and to find an applicable method of assessing the health status of urban rivers.

This work aims to develop an urban-rural river continuum identification system by analyzing the various factors which are influencing urban river systems, in order to identify urban and rural river reaches in a longitudinal term. And to establish an applicable fuzzy based mapping method which can assess the ecological status of urban river easily, in order to point out the bottlenecks of urban river' health status and to implement the effective rehabilitation measures.
