In many GCC countries there are no existing guidelines regarding minimum standards of flood protection ensuring a sustainable development. This leads, for instance, to construction measures in wadis, resulting in severe damage to houses and infrastructure during flood events. In addition, problems due to the high percentage of impervious areas and limited capacities of the drainage or the sewer system occur in many cases.
Based on field visits, on-site workshops and existing literature as well as best practice guidelines, this study will develop a guideline for a minimum standard for flood protection in one of the GCC countries.
