Experimental models for the operation of a flood retention basin in the Rems valley

Project content

The aim of the Wasserverband Rems (Rems Water Association) is to ensure 100-year flood protection in the Rems Valley, taking into account a water ecology concept. A water retention basin near Urbach/Schorndorf is planned to regulate the discharge during a flood event. Between 2014 and 2016 a physical model test was carried out at the IWS to determine the discharge hydrographs for different operation conditions.

A berm is added to the wear to ensure terrestrial continuity for animals. This leads to a reduction in the flow area of the two outer wear fields. Within the scope of this study, experimental and numerical models are used to investigate the effect of these measures in different flood cases. Hereby, the characteristic curves of the wear are determined in order to optimize the control of the retention basin in practical operation.
