Demonstration of the Suitability of Surfactants for the In-situ Remediation of PAH-contaminated Sites: Laboratory and Field Investigations for a Surfactant Enhanced Extraction of PAH

Abstract

The feasibility of a surfactant enhanced aquifer remediation technology forPAH-contaminated sites was tested in a pilot study. For this reason a small section (7 * 7 m) ofa larger contaminated area was flushed with a surfactant solution. It turned out that the use ofsurfactants can decrease the times for a remediation dramatically. Within only 20 days of asurfactant pushing, about 50 percent of the PAH could be removed. The surfactants could bereused after removal of the PAH by selective sorption to active carbon
