New research project for Bernd Flemisch und Martin Schneider within SFB 1667

April 12, 2024 /

Bernd Flemisch and Martin Schneider start a new research project within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1667 " Advancing Technologies of Very Low Altitude Satellites (ATLAS)" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

SFB 1667, Research Project B3: Porous Structures as Atomic Oxygen Trap

An improved collector efficiency for atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion systems can be achieved by using porous structures. The occurring rarefied non-equilibrium flows and sorption processes within porous structures will be described in detail using the particle-based DSMC code PICLas. Based on these findings, methods for efficient scaling to macroscopic structures will be developed and evaluated, realizing effective relationships between networks of pore bodies with a fast but faithful surrogate model.
