Determination of possible colmation processes in the residual water channel of a hydropower plant

Abstract

The project focuses on a detailed assessment of substrate conditions in the residual water channel, in order to give qualitative statements concerning the condition of the river bed. The determination of the infiltrating mass, their grain size distribution and the infiltration depth is crucial for the determination of possible colmation processes. Four methods are combined to facilitate the detection of both exterior and interior colmation:

Mapping of zones with possible exterior colmation

Freeze-core sampling to determine the infiltration depth of fine sediments in the subsurface layer

Freeze-panel sampling to determine the percentage of fine sediments in the surface layer

Measurements of dissolved oxygen in the interstitial zone

For the project the studied river bed in the residual water channel will be compared with up- and downstream reference sections, in order to give qualitative statements regarding the state of colmation.
