Real time control of water infrastructure has a long tradition in water and wastewater treatment or the operation of reservoirs. Today we have the opportunity to extend such control to larger hydrological systems like aquifers or watersheds. All ingredients needed are available at reasonable cost: a network of sensors (possibly also on a satellite), a real time model assimilating these data, and an optimization method making suggestions to the controller of the water system. In the talk, a real time groundwater model of the Limmat valley aquifer is presented. It is used for real time control of infiltration wells of the Hardhof water works of Zurich. The goal of the control is to prevent polluted water from Zurich city to enter the water works' abstraction wells. The system has been operated successfully since 2 years assimilating data on a daily basis. In a new effort we explore the control of temperature of the pumped water.
