Abstract
Soil salinization is one of the major soil degradation threats worldwide. It degrades fertile and productive land, and hampers plant growth. With changing climate and rising global temperatures, soil salinization is expected to increase in semi-arid areas. There are many causes of soil salinization and in this talk we will in particular focus on the role of groundwater evaporation. If solutes are present in the groundwater, their concentration will increase due to the water evaporating, eventually resulting in threatening concentrations. By mathematical modeling of groundwater evaporation and connected processes, we can analyze their coupling and influence. The soil is however a porous medium, hence interactions are depending on the considered scale. In this talk we focus on Darcy and pore scale, and in particular connections across scales.
